Guard Dog Nash Greets San Diego Burglar With Toys During Home Break-In
SAN DIEGO — A San Diego family’s home burglary took an unexpected turn when their 90-pound golden retriever, Nash, apparently decided the intruder was a new playmate rather than a threat.
The break-in happened earlier this month at a home in Sherman Heights, near 20th and J streets. Homeowner Dante Rowley said his family watched through their security cameras as a man used a ladder from behind a shed to reach an open second-story window and enter the house.
Once inside, the intruder reportedly removed his shoes and shirt, helped himself to food from the refrigerator and even took a nap during the roughly 30 minutes he spent inside.
But four-year-old Nash had other plans.
Security video shows the friendly golden retriever repeatedly approaching the intruder and bringing him toys at least three times, apparently hoping he would play.
“Nash is not the greatest guard dog,” Rowley told NBC 7. “We thought that he would be barking at people and he did the exact opposite.”
Police arrived while the alleged suspect was still at the residence and took him into custody. He was identified in local reporting as 57-year-old John Cline, who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary. The homeowner said nothing was stolen and the house was not damaged.
And Nash apparently holds no grudges: when police arrived, he reportedly greeted the officers with a toy, too.
