UPDATE 10/28/2024

In accordance with current legislation, including Senate Bill 1421 and Assembly Bill 748, the Long Beach Police Department discloses certain records and video evidence related to critical incidents, such as officer-involved shootings.

Today, the Department is releasing a Critical Incident Video regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Aug. 7, 2024, near Pacific Avenue and 5th Street. Critical Incident Videos support the disclosure of certain documents and evidence by providing the public with an additional preliminary review of a critical incident.

As with all officer-involved shootings, this incident is currently undergoing a thorough multi-level review process by the Police Department, as well as a separate independent investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The following Critical Incident Video contains graphic footage and can be difficult to watch; viewer discretion is advised.

The Long Beach Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting which occurred on Aug. 7, 2024.

At approximately 9:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to multiple reports of a man brandishing a firearm on the Metro Rail platform at West 5th Street and Pacific Avenue. Officers arrived and located the suspect.

The suspect immediately exited the platform and fled on foot. Officers went in foot pursuit, and, during the pursuit, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Officers rendered medical aid to the suspect until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. Fire personnel transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper body. The suspect was medically cleared and transported to the Long Beach City Jail for booking.

The suspect was identified as Tyrell Harris, a 35-year-old person experiencing homelessness, who was booked for three counts of criminal threats, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of obstruction and resisting arrest, one count of exhibiting an imitation firearm, and an unrelated felony No Bail warrant. He’s being held without bail.

Officers recovered a replica firearm later discovered to be an operable BB pistol with CO2 cartridge and BBs.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene to further investigate the incident. Detectives discovered Harris pointed his weapon at multiple citizens on the platform and threatened to shoot them.

No officers were injured. No other injuries were reported.

Officers were equipped with body-worn cameras. LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible.

As with all officer-involved shooting incidents, the Department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death.
