Over the weekend, a tragic murder-suicide occurred in southwest Miami-Dade, where a man shot and killed a woman and her roommate before taking his own life, officials reported.
The incident unfolded shortly before 9 a.m. on Saturday at a Bird Road apartment building located at 7004 Southwest 40th Street.
Identified as the gunman, 40-year-old Luis Napoles fatally shot Meghan Moore, 25, and her roommate, 23-year-old Sidney Capolino, both residents of the apartment, according to Miami-Dade Police.
Upon receiving reports of a shooting, officers responded to the building and discovered Moore outside with a gunshot wound. As they attempted to assist her, another gunshot was heard from inside the apartment, prompting the evacuation of the building while the Special Response Team was dispatched.
Upon entering the apartment, authorities found Capolino and Napoles with gunshot wounds, all pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Napoles shot Moore outside the apartment before proceeding inside to shoot Capolino and then himself.
Although Napoles and Moore were reported to have been in a romantic relationship, acquaintances and family indicated they were merely former colleagues.
Both Moore and Capolino were confirmed to have been student-athletes at New England College, with Moore graduating in 2021 and Capolino in 2022. The college community mourned their loss, offering support and counseling services to those affected.
Neighbors expressed shock and sadness over the tragic incident, emphasizing the need for community support during such challenging times.
As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to determine a motive for the shooting.
