The incident unfolded at an apartment building situated on Bergen Street. In response to a distress call from a woman alleging assault by her son, three NYPD officers and a police sergeant promptly arrived at the scene.

Upon arrival, officers identified the suspect as 39-year-old Melvin Butler Jr., who had reportedly assaulted his mother, resulting in a head injury.

During the attempt to apprehend Butler, he resisted arrest, leading to a physical altercation. In the midst of the scuffle, Butler managed to seize one of the officer’s firearms and discharged it, injuring one officer in the left hand and another in the left thigh.

Both wounded officers were expeditiously transported to Kings County Hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

Authorities reported that Butler sustained multiple gunshot wounds from an officer returning fire and is currently in critical but stable condition.

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban emphasized the inherent dangers of patrol duty, highlighting that no patrol tasks are ever routine for NYPD officers.
