Officer Involved Shooting in West Phoenix

(February 20, 2023) Phoenix police detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting that
occurred Monday evening near 60th Lane and McDowell Road that left a man dead after he pulled a
gun on officers.

Just before 10:45 p.m. officers spotted a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in the area of 35th
Avenue and Van Buren Street. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the vehicle continued. The
Air Unit followed the vehicle overhead as patrol vehicles pulled back. As the Air Unit was following,
the vehicle stops, and a man gets out and tries to take another vehicle at gunpoint but the vehicle
drives off. The man gets back into the suspect vehicle and drives off.

The suspect vehicle drove to the area of 60th Lane and McDowell Road where the car stopped, and
the suspect gets out again and runs towards other vehicles stopped on the street, in an attempt to
take a vehicle. Officers moved in as the man ran towards another car that stopped on McDowell Road
with a gun in hand. This was when the officer involved shooting occurred.

After the shooting, officers were able to get the firearm away from the man and provided medical aid
until the fire department took over. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Detectives responded to process the scene, speak to witnesses and collect evidence.

The investigation remains active.
