A Prince George’s County Police Officer encountered Melvin Jay while responding to a burglary call.

On February 1, 2024, a Prince George’s County Police patrol officer was involved in a fatal shooting inside of a Suitland apartment.

The officer had been the first to arrive on the scene of a reported breaking and entering in progress.

Thirty-one-year-old Melvin Jay was killed in the incident. The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is leading the investigation into the shooting and today that agency released the officer’s body-worn camera video.

In an effort to communicate directly with the residents of Prince George’s County, Police Chief Malik Aziz is sharing this video which offers additional information regarding the shooting.
