San Jose Police Department Press Release Re: Jaime Cruz Castanon Arrest
On May 14, 2025, at approximately 6:08 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a business parking lot in the 1700 Block of Southwest Expressway for a report of a person down. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male victim who was not conscious nor breathing. Medical personnel arrived on scene and subsequently pronounced the victim deceased. During the preliminary investigation, the manner of injuries of the victim were not readily apparent. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene, and further on-scene examination by a Santa Clara County Medical Examiner noted signs of trauma consistent with being hit by a vehicle.
During the course of the investigation, Officers discovered corroborating evidence that confirmed the victim had been struck by a vehicle in what appeared to be an intentional act.
Based on recovered evidence, the San José Police Department’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene and began a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the incident. Detectives worked in close coordination with the Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC), where analysts examined footage from the recently expanded network of public safety cameras in an effort to identify the suspect vehicle.
By leveraging this camera network, alongside Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology, Detectives identified both a suspect vehicle and a person of interest, Jaime Cruz Castanon. That same evening, the vehicle and Suspect Cruz Castanon were located in the city of San José and taken into custody.
Suspect Cruz Castanon was later confirmed to be the suspect and was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.
This incident is being investigated as the City’s 10th homicide of 2025.
