San Jose Police Department Press Release Re: James Goodman and Devinae Mitchell Arrest
On May 2, 2026, at approximately 12:54 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a possible person shot in the 1000 Block of Summerside Drive. Upon arrival, Officers located an unconscious adult male victim lying in the driveway of the apartment complex suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers immediately began life saving measures and summoned medical personnel to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was ultimately pronounced deceased. The unknown suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.
SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives responded to the scene and began a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
During the course of the investigation, Detectives identified James Goodman and Devinae Mitchell as the two primary suspects.
On June 18, 2026, with the assistance of the SJPD Covert Response Unit and Hercules Police Department, Detectives located and apprehended both suspects in the city of Hercules. The suspects were later booked into Santa Clara County Jail for murder.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the event are under investigation.
This incident was the City’s 9th homicide of 2026.
