San Mateo County supervisors unanimously vote to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted 5-0 on October 14, 2025, to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus from office, concluding a historic and months-long effort to oust her over misconduct allegations. The vote, which takes effect immediately, marks the first time in California history that a county sheriff has been removed from office by a board of supervisors.
The removal process began after the passage of Measure A in March 2025, which gave the board the authority to remove an elected sheriff for cause. Misconduct allegations against Sheriff Corpus led to investigations and formal removal proceedings, which included a hearing before a retired judge who substantiated multiple grounds for removal.
Key findings against Sheriff Corpus included a conflict of interest, the illegal ordering of an arrest, and retaliation against a subordinate.
Undersheriff Dan Perea is now the temporary sheriff. The Board of Supervisors must appoint a replacement or call a special election within 30 days. Sheriff Corpus denies the allegations and has filed lawsuits to challenge her removal. More information is available on the San Mateo County website.
