The U.S. military confirmed it carried out a strike on a suspected Venezuela-linked drug-smuggling vessel in the southern Caribbean, killing 11 people. Officials described the target as a maritime trafficking operation connected to the Tren de Aragua criminal gang.

President Donald Trump called the operation a success and referred to those killed as “narco-terrorists.” He said the strike reflects his administration’s commitment to intensifying counter-narcotics measures in the hemisphere.

The Venezuelan government swiftly condemned the attack. President Nicolás Maduro accused Washington of violating Venezuelan sovereignty and claimed the United States fabricated evidence to justify the operation. “This is nothing more than an act of aggression dressed up as law enforcement,” Maduro said in a televised statement.

The incident comes amid a broader U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean, part of what defense officials describe as an effort to disrupt transnational criminal networks. However, critics argue the move risks igniting a deeper conflict with Venezuela, which has long accused the U.S. of plotting regime change.

Regional observers warn that the clash could further strain U.S.-Venezuela relations, already at their lowest point in years. Human rights groups have called for an independent investigation into the deaths.
