PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM ZAPATA COUNTY SHERIFF RAMON E. MONTES REGARDING USE-OF-FORCE INCIDENT

The Zapata County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a use-of-force incident circulating on social media involving a subject who was tased after resisting arrest. I want to assure our community that this incident was immediately reviewed in accordance with our policies and procedures.
Our command staff has carefully examined all body-worn camera footage, in-car video, and any video posted online. Based on this thorough review, the actions taken by our deputies were clear, appropriate, and within departmental policy. The subject involved was actively resisting arrest, and the deployment of the Taser was used as a lawful, controlled response to gain compliance and prevent further escalation.
Recently, our deputies received updated Taser training and were issued new Taser units through our ongoing modernization efforts. This equipment is specifically designed to reduce the likelihood of serious injuries to both deputies and suspects by providing a safe, less-lethal option when confronted with active resistance. The proper and professional use of these tools helps resolve volatile situations quickly and with minimal harm.
As your Sheriff, transparency and accountability remain top priorities of my administration. Every use-of-force incident is taken seriously and is evaluated to ensure that our deputies act professionally, responsibly, and in a manner that upholds public trust.
I want to thank the community for their patience as we conducted our review. The Zapata County Sheriff’s Office will continue working every day to protect our residents while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and service.
