Missing Arizona Boy Identified As Mitchell John Pauli 44 Years After His Remains Were Discovered

BUCKEYE, ARIZONA — A mystery spanning more than four decades has finally been solved after investigators identified skeletal remains discovered in the Arizona desert in 1982 as those of Mitchell John Pauli, a 14-year-old boy who disappeared in the late 1970s.
The DNA Doe Project announced the identification on October 6, 2026, bringing a name to a child who had remained unidentified for 44 years.
On April 22, 1982, U.S. Air Force personnel searching for a fallen aircraft gun pod in a remote section of White Tank Mountain Regional Park discovered a human skull and several vertebrae.
Investigators determined the remains belonged to a boy between 13 and 19 years old who had apparently died one to three years earlier. Investigators recovered no clothing or personal belongings.
For decades, the unidentified child was known only as “John Maricopa County Doe.”
The breakthrough came in May 2026, when the nonprofit DNA Doe Project began examining genetic evidence and family ancestry records.
Researchers traced DNA connections to Missouri and Kentucky before discovering a boy born in St. Louis in 1964 whose family relocated to Buckeye, Arizona, in 1967.
That boy was Mitchell Pauli.
Remarkably, his family had lived approximately five miles from where the remains were discovered.
Investigators presented their findings to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office, where additional DNA testing confirmed Mitchell’s identity.
Despite the identification, significant questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed Mitchell’s cause or manner of death, and researchers reportedly could not locate a missing-person report associated with his disappearance.
The identification demonstrates how modern forensic genetic genealogy can solve decades-old mysteries.
For Mitchell’s surviving relatives, the discovery may finally provide long-awaited answers about a young boy whose fate remained unknown for nearly half a century.
