Retired San Francisco Police Sergeant Kevin Mannix Allegedly Kills Estranged Wife and Daughter in Marin County Murder-Suicide

MARIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — October 12, 2026
A retired San Francisco police sergeant allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife, a former high-ranking San Francisco police official, and their 24-year-old daughter Sunday evening before turning the gun on himself, according to published reports citing law enforcement sources.
The victims were identified as retired San Francisco Police Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and her daughter, Katie Mannix, 24. The alleged gunman was Ann’s estranged husband, retired SFPD Sergeant Kevin Mannix, 68.
The tragedy unfolded Sunday, October 11, inside a residence on Strawberry Circle in the unincorporated Marin County community of Strawberry, near Mill Valley.
According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call reporting gunfire inside the residence at approximately 5:03 p.m.
The caller escaped the home before deputies arrived. Responding officers secured the property and subsequently discovered three deceased individuals inside.
Sources familiar with the investigation told the San Francisco Chronicle that Kevin Mannix fatally shot his wife and daughter before taking his own life.
Ann Mannix had a distinguished career with the San Francisco Police Department, becoming the first woman to join and later command its SWAT team. She subsequently rose to deputy chief before retiring in 2021.
Kevin Mannix retired in 2018 after approximately 27 years with the department.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew notified department personnel of the deaths Sunday evening and offered support services.
Although the reported circumstances suggest a domestic violence-related murder-suicide involving an estranged couple, investigators have not officially established a motive.
Marin County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating. Authorities say there is no known continuing threat to the community.
