Video footage released by the NYPD shows the moment an officer kills a man with a single gunshot as the unhinged suspect holds his mother in a chokehold while screaming that he had a knife inside a Bronx apartment last December.
Police officer Alex Morgese fired off a single shot at suspect Michael Dotel, striking him in the head just inches from the victim’s face during the tense confrontation on Dec. 23, according to the footage and police.
The 30-year-old suspect fell backward to the ground and was later pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
In Bronx, NY, on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at approximately 11:22 a.m., NYPD Police Officer Morgese and his partner, Police Officer Mohammad Hossain, rushed to a residential building near East 198th Street and Creston Avenue in response to a distressing 911 call. The call reported a person suspected of ingesting drugs, exhibiting violent behavior, and wielding a knife.
As the officers arrived, they were confronted by a harrowing scene. A 19-year-old woman, identified as the suspect’s girlfriend, emerged from the apartment, her face marked with evident slash wounds, screaming for help.
Inside the apartment, the officers encountered a dire situation. The suspect, Michael Dotel, 30 years old, was holding his mother in a headlock, a large carving knife pressed against her throat. The 45-year-old woman showed visible signs of injury, bleeding profusely from the inflicted wounds.
With the situation rapidly deteriorating and the woman’s life in imminent danger, Police Officer Morgese made a split-second decision to discharge his service firearm. A single shot rang out, striking Dotel and causing him to release his grip on his mother. Despite immediate medical intervention, Dotel succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased upon arrival at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
At the scene, officers recovered the knife used in the assault. Both injured women were swiftly transported by ambulance to Saint Barnabas Medical Center, where they received treatment for the injuries inflicted during Dotel’s violent outburst.
