Cedric Irving Jr. was arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of Laney College’s Coach John Beam.
Authorities on Friday arrested the man they believe shot and killed beloved Laney College football coach and athletic director John Beam.
Cedric Irving Jr., 27, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of John Beam, the respected athletic director and former head football coach at Laney College. John Beam was shot on the Laney College campus in Oakland, California, on Thursday, November 13, 2025, and died from his injuries the following morning, Friday, November 14, 2025.
Oakland police announced the arrest on Friday, stating that Irving was taken into custody without incident at the San Leandro BART station earlier that morning by Alameda County sheriff’s deputies. A weapon was recovered during the arrest that matched the caliber of ballistic evidence from the scene.
Authorities described the incident as a “very targeted incident” and confirmed that Irving knew Beam, though they did not have a close relationship. Police noted that Irving was not a student at Laney College but was known to loiter around the campus. He played football at Skyline High School, where Beam once coached, but not at the time Beam was there.
A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed by police, and Irving has not yet been formally charged. The death of Beam, a beloved figure in the community who was featured in the Netflix show Last Chance U, has deeply shaken Oakland.
